> Some argue that the recent jump in severe hurricanes was caused by a
> rise in sea- surface temperatures that is just part of a natural cycle. That
> position is scientifically untenable....

Why?

Nice cherry picking there with Emanuel's comments. But the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has just recently released a statement, Kerry Emanuel is one of the authors.

"The possibility that greenhouse gas induced global warming may have already caused a substantial increase in some tropical cyclone indices has been raised (e.g. Mann and Emanuel, 2006), but no consensus has been reached on this issue."

Another conclusion from the statement on the debate over tropical storm and seasonal trends in the Emanuel research.

"This is still hotly debated area for which we can provide no definitive conclusion."

Carl will have to buy "Hell and High Water" to to find the answer to his question.

As for disarming the hippie with a pistol, let me say that I have had an extendsive back-and-forth and can safely say that I am not cherry-picking Emanuel's comments. I have accurately reported what he believes in my book.
