We are the organization that brought the lawsuit against Unocal (which is now ChevronTexaco) in Burma.

As Chevron claims to be opening dialogue through its new Human Energy campaign, we want Chevron to open dialogue about its on-going partnership with the Burmese junta, a partnership that is exempt from the recent tightening of US sanctions.

The power of human energy indeed:

Beyond Nigeria and Ecuador, Chevron has gas field interests in Burma acquired via Unocal. Unocal settled the lawsuits on Burmese slave labour to build their pipeline prior to Chevron's acquisition to minimize the PR problems after the rebranding.

And yes, when President Bush says he cannot influence the Burmese military junta with tougher sanctions, he means that he doesn't want to stop the profits at the company which used to employ his Sec of State as a Board member and sailed an oil tanker named after her.

I saw what had to be a two-minute spot for this new campaign on Sunday in primetime. Can't imagine what it must have cost them. It felt like its own show. At one point, my partner commented that it was so long, it should have had its own commercial break within.
