That's exacly what the esteemed Dr. James Hansen does in this little fluff piece our friends here at ClimateProgress have created. The good doctor spends a lot of time and effort rambling about GAP, yet no mention of the Soros money funneled through Fenton Communications to set up sites like <a href="http://veritasnoctis.blogspot.com/2007/05/more-hypocrisy-realclimate-and-funding.html" rel="nofollow">RealClimate.org</a>. Hmmmm. Why is that? Hey, are you guys gonna write a piece about Hansen getting nailed for <a href="http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/sppi_originals/u.s._temperature_rankings_rearranged_problems_and_concerns_with_temperature_data_sets.html" rel="nofollow">falsifying NASA's temperature record</a>? Rumor has it Mr. Clean and Transparent was a little miffed about having to share the program he uses to "fix" bad data from the surface temperature measurements. I'd love to hear your thoughts. For a long time, blogging scientists have been saying that the CS community needs a figurehead, a representative who can hold their own in debate and say what needs to be said. I have a lot of admiration for Hansen; the team he is working with are doing important work in many ways, and he acts as a very able spokesperson. It looks as if, whether by design or accident, Jim Hansen is becoming such a figure. My concern is not about his personal qualities or his qualifications, but about the very process of 'pedestalisation' itself. I hope this helps explain what I didn't get at very well in the first place...
