This is just a blatant guess, but could the problem simply be that the units in the graph Pielke used were "MBOE"--millions of barrels of oil equivalent? Could that have opened the door for the erroneous assumption that there was a direct equivalence between energy and carbon?

I'm not suggesting that this in any way excuses the error, merely that it might explain it.

Joe, your readers are far too smart to fall for this silliness:

How about we focus on substance, rather than then overheated attacks focused on semantics?

Hmm. Let's see, Roger. You said, "“bloggers at Grist … make up ‘facts’ to support their critiques of him.” I assume you were including me.

But I'm not making up facts. And this is not a semantic debate. You can't redefine decarbonization to make your attack on Grist accurate. You wrote:
"To suggest that decarbonization has gone on for “centuries” is just plain wrong."

It is NOT wrong. It is what the literature, including the IPCC, says.

I'd be happy to focus on substance, but you have ignored my primary substantive critiques.

Dr. Pielke, how much money were you paid to write for Cato's Regulation Magazine? Just wondering.....

Thom: The problem as a skeptic is to get money. Big corporations don't give anything to anti-AGW, but a lot to AGW (that's dangerous). To be published in Nature or Science, or to proceed career you can't have a critical mind on this issue. So your question I think should have been the opposite.

Conspiracy arguments also shows that there are no real arguments.

Let me complement your personal critics without proof with proof for something we can smile at, deleted here yesterday:

Magnus, I'm trying to understand what you're saying. Are you saying that conflicts of interest regarding outside income is irrelevant? If so, then why do journals require reports of conflicts of interest?

The point I was making is that Roger Pielke Jr. is seen as the perfect contrarian for anti-regulatory groups like Cato. That's why they hired Roger to write for them.

Unless Pielke Jr. would like to refute this. Again, Roger....how much silver did Cato drop in your pocket?

I'm saying that Big Oil puts huge amounts in the AGW business but nothing to contrarians. That is too risky and can damage the whole company.

Your argument is plain conspiracy theory with no proof at all, and may be considered as libel, but who cares about a stupid blog comment.
