Yes, Shakespearean tragedy. Now combine it with a dose of deadly Sellers farce:

"In Dr. Strangelove, one nuclear device dropped on Siberia unleashed a thousand more. Here, in the real world of melting Arctic permafrost, one degree of global warming could unleash enough methane to raise temperatures several more degrees."

Fred Pearce, With Speed and Violence, p.79.

Let's not forget this NOAA report showing some of the most drastic warming occurring over Siberia - posted by Joe here: http://climateprogress.org/2008/04/17/noaa-the-second-warmest-march-on-record/

Joe, I wanted to make sure you were aware of this related research relating to the clathrates on the East Siberian Shelf:

Der Spiegel article: http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,547976,00.html.

Abstracts (these are from EGU 2008): http://www.cosis.net/abstracts/EGU2008/01526/EGU2008-A-01526.pdf?PHPSESSID=c0ae24c54d and http://www.cosis.net/abstracts/EGU2008/00125/EGU2008-A-00125.pdf?PHPSESSID=c0ae24c54d

As far as I can tell the Spiegel article was the only press coverage, which seems odd given that the land permafrost issue has gotten a fair amount of attention.

The first time I learned of this issue was from a scientist at NCAR when he gave a presentation at Stanford. It was a great talk; take a look at the slides for yourself. I was amazed that NCAR had a team of scientists devoted to just the permafrost portion of their global climate model (that's how detailed these things are). I was also amazed at his slide 20 (and remember GHG are exceeding all of the scenarios on that slide, they are closer to A1FI I think). But the real shocker was slide 40, where he talked about 1-4 PgC per year in currently not modeled feedback. That is like adding another US and China.

Permafrost scientists have been raising this warning for a few years now. I wonder when we will start to listen?

Boy, that young guy shoulda won American Idol, don't you think? At least that Asian girl won 'Stars'. So glad the writer's strike is over, aren't you?

Dano, I have no idea what you are talking about. I haven't watched TV for years, so I've only heard of American Idol, and never heard of Stars.

Earl,

Apologies - I'm just illustrating the distractions away from reality that the average Murrican 'enjoys' every day. Things that they pay attention to rather than listening to what's outside.

BTW, I don't own a TV either, but the future mother-in-law enjoys distractions.

Best,
