Joe,

We are having Senator Barbara Boxer here in my neighborhood in Davis for a fundraiser on June 14. I would be happy to hand-deliver anything you like, and I might have a moment to chat with her. Let me know how I can help. She is one of the best environmental senators, and I know she is willing to listen.

Jim:

I am a long-time fan of Sen. Boxer since I first worked with her and her staff in 1987/1988 when she was a representative. Few people work as tirelessly as she does for progressive causes. This cost-containment stuff is, however, a big deal and people need to understand it better.

Feel free to hand her this post, but the Senate debate on B-L-W will be over by then.

Joe, a great piece of analysis supported, in part by WRI and work done by Stanford.

Yes, the BLW is now a cadaver but it has real value in that we will hear more analysis in the next year regarding impact of CO2 mitigation on the nation’s ailing economy. Sen. Boxer is as good as there is in the Congress when it comes to environmental advocacy but she lives in the larger world of the 60 vote straight jacket and with the reality that energy prices and tight credit and huge debt are beginning to melt America’s middle class. Balancing all of that in a Bush Administration is not possible but this is the time to honestly study impacts of what the next Congress and Administration might offer and finally adopt. Keep publishing analyses from all corners and we will be intellectually prepared next year to factor in GDP and CO2 because accept-it-or-not American lifestyle cannot survive without the former and seems to need the latter to kept the GDP pumped.

Finally, *****don’t let this thread get lost in the bottomless pit of archives*****. I suggest you create a box near the top of your page that links us immediately to this and subsequent analyses and discussions on this.

From here on out, America gets to write either its history or its obituary beforehand.

Even a DOA bill has a purpose, and that is to foreshadow what is to come, and that foreshadowing does have an effect. Even a global warming denier will avoid investments based upon what he sees Congress doing. I suspect Kansas would be building those coal plants right now if it weren't for the threat of a price on carbon. Wall Street is very reluctant to fund coal right now, and that is because of what has been taking place in Congress. They know Congress doesn't have the votes this year, but they also know that there will be quite a few new faces in the Senate and House in 2009. Polls currently suggest the Senate will be only 55D-45R next year, which is unfortunately probably not good enough to pass strong legislation (though there are of course Republicans who get it--Senator Warner for example voted for S.2555 recently), but they will probably pass something. Let's hope we can just keep making it stronger with each election.

I Actually think this bill sends the wrong message to coal companies. And it is worse than I thought, as I will blog shortly.
