It may be true that McCain's gaffe after gaffe make him very vulnerable, but the majority of coverage in the Denver papers this weekend was how strrrrrrong! McCain is and how inexperrrrrrrienced! Obama is. Western Colo mayors are digging in their heels against this perceived stealing of water, but it's hardly mentioned.

Best,

McCain probably wants the water for all those nuclear power plants he wants to build ;-) If he had backed windmills and stirling dishes instead he might have had a chance at Colorado's votes.

In your rush to find the political angle you omit to consider the actual facts at hand. When the compact was agreed to in 1922, it overestimated the flow of the river. Recent drought and climate change is making that even worse, and in fact in 2007 the amount allocated to the lower basin states (but not upper basin like Colorado) was cut due to low levels in Lake Mead.

Basically, over its entire history Arizona has struggled with Colorado over the agreement, so McCain's comments are entirely understandable. However, renegotiating the agreement isn't necessarily anti-environmental since the original agreement was flawed.
