CapitalClimate has archived a meteorologist's perspective on the event and its aftermath as it occurred. Unfortunately, the reader comments haven't been preserved, but they showed remarkable hostility from the audience of what was then a DC weather blog to the attention being given to the subject. See TPM Election Central for the lesson Rove and the Republicans learned from Katrina.

Cyclone Sidr 's death toll exceeded 3400. But of course it had no effect on American politics.

Joe: I find myself reliving my own memories of Hurricane Katrina today (I was a reporter at the time, covering the destruction along the Gulf Coast), and thinking about the lessons that it should have taught us about climate and natural disasters -- lessons that seem to have already been forgotten by many. I just hope that Gustav doesn't give us another grim reminder this week. Here's my blog entry at NRDC's Switchboard: http://tinyurl.com/5ee7sa

I don't know if I would agree that the people from Houston were forced to leave their homes. They were scared into leaving their homes when the only ones who needed to be leaving their homes were people who lived along the Gulf (places like Galveston.) The people from Houston poured out onto the freeway and created a total freakin' mess. I sat on my lawn chair and watched the circus, and soon got to enjoy a freeway system that was just about completely empty.

Joe,

I'm assisting with this new blog - http://ruff264.vox.com/library/post/times-they-are-a-changing.html - called Albert's Arrival. We think it's a pretty clever idea to broaden audiences. There's a strong recommend your book. While climate is global and thus scenesetter for local - like kiwis - the politics will be local.

Though content is broader and deserves bigger. Much bigger. If you can help we'd be grateful.. oyes, there's an election here, too, this november.. and keeping them honest is the challenge..
