After all, McCain is hiding behind Gov. Palin's skirt(s). He can't draw a crowd alone and with her he just whines about how everyone is being unfair to her. What a message for what he will do in office!

re: Palin: It's politics as entertainment. Many people find her entertaining; she is even entertaining for her critics such as myself. They don't quite know what's she's going to do next. They are not thinking of her as an occupant of a job that will have impact on their lives. It's like going to the movies or the theater: you are looking for identification with the characters and perhaps a little emotional release.

The Democrats have to pull people out of the attitude of spectators at a show and into the attitude of decision-makers with a task to do for the future. They can do this in a clever or amusing way but they need to do it to make an impact.

I found out yesterday that it is illegal here (Texas) to operate or assemble amusement park or fairground rides while intoxicated.

(I mention this because of the obvious parallels to the current administration and any possible McCain administration)

I saw McCain a few times this morning on the morning shows. Apparently he was on all 7 this morning. (Biden followed him on the shows I saw, maybe it was that way on all 7)

I have very little respect for McCain or his campaign. Anything that knocks him off would be good.

Anyway, McCain was on TV (also from speeches) that he is going to clean up Wall Street, clean up the corruption and he was going to make sure this fiancial meltdown to not happen again. The same old lies, overpromise and become the superman for everybody that Republicans do around election time.

But what is it that happened that got Wall Street is so much trouble. The prime reason is that there was to much money that was put into real estate. There was also bad finacing schemes that went with that and is what allowed to much money into real estate.

But the Republicans and McCain are going after a program for energy of 'all of the energy sources.' That would be Nuclear, offshore oil drilling, etc. If it's all of these sources, isn't that just openning energy to be the next bubble? McCain says he wants to protect American workers from corruption on Wall Street and bad regulations, but McCain and the Republicans are setting America up for the Nuclear Power bubble and all the other energy sources that can become uneconomic after they are economic with more expensive Oil and Gas. Who protects us from a corrupt McCain.

What paulm implied.

The front page of the Rocky Mt News had an interesting foto of women in the Palin rally yesterday in JeffCo holding up lipstick, similar to the 'purple finger' last cycle. I tell you, the Repubs know how to create these icons to appeal to the personality types that go for that stuff. Would that the Dems or an independent candidate could do the same - provided the recipients are homogeneous enough to go for iconography...

Best,

<blockquote>
What is it about Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin that appeals to women voters?

...'Pioneer woman'...

I asked Mrs Palin's supporters there if there were any specific policies of hers they admire. None could name a single one, but that did not seem to dampen their admiration.

"She's interesting, she's hard-working," I was told. "I think she's going to do a great job."

Joe,
I'm sorry but I think this message is opaque to most people in the US nowadays. Talk of "honor" is a little old-fashioned, though being honorable never goes out of fashion. I subscribe to the principles behind it myself but I believe people have such low expectations for politicians and public discourse in general that the damage that lack of honesty in offices causes THEM needs to be highlighted.

Furthermore, some of the most inveterate liars claim to be honest and harp on honesty...you can expose the lies of others, but it is difficult to claim honesty for yourself...you have to prove that through action. There is of course the liar's paradox, which is the strongest paradox in philosophy.

I'm just not sold on this as an effective and winning campaign message. I do however believe that being honest and pointing out the dangers of dishonesty needs to be the basic practice in all politics rather than the content of a message.

I'm thrilled by the new campaign and the new talking points.

Yesterday, I felt like September 15 was a turning point in North America, with this new energy in the Obama campaign, and news that the Conservative Party in Canada had dropped 4 points in the polls to 37 percent of decided voters.

And I've found a half dozen web sites, all professionally done, that are trying to do what I'm doing... Keeping the Conservatives from office, and boost the fortunes of the opposition parties. I've even found a site that that will help Canadians vote strategically to ensure that close ridings will swing to the parties that have serious climate change policies.
