I have to admit that I did not know was a Zeiss was but when McSame was talking about an overhead projector in a planetarium I knew he was wrong. Mostly because his mouth was open. But I work on the field campaign so thanks for the talking point.

Science, of course, is fact-based and not easily contained by a knee-jerk ideological world view and therefore it must be scorned.

Even worse, a truly thriving scientific capacity often points to the importance of collective action -- government action -- to constrain our worst selves. Climate change, species protection, habitat protection, sustainably harvesting the world's resources, physical and biological resources; each of these calls for control -- and Republicans would like all power vested in corporate America, not Americans.

"if he knew this was a Zeiss and knew what a Zeiss was and talked about it the way he did anyway, then he is a far more cynical, anti-science, and anti-education politician than I had imagined"

That's my thinking. He is a Republican. They all think that way. You get a real backstage look at them if you watch (or just listen) to all the webcasts from capitolhearings.org from the environment committee, and the energy committee.

One of McCain's favorite science bashes is money spent to study bear DNA.
The multi-year Grizzly bear project shows they're in better shape than was realized.

http://fwp.mt.gov/news/article_7272.aspx

More bears, more genetic diversity - surprisingly good news.

Ironically, this has an upside for the <strike>single</strike> simple-minded.
The Bush Administration reads it as an OK to do more drillin for oil & gas within the bear's range - or as Sidekick Sarah would say "you betcha!"
