Honeywell is proud to be the major contractor supplying foam and foam application in Iraq. This competitive program is not only showing the cost savings listed in the article, but it is also having a major impact on soldier morale. In this day where the press can come up with very few positives about procurements in Iraq, this program is one where everyone can hold their heads high.

Defense Science Board Task Force on DoD Energy Strategy

The silent gorilla in the room might well have been the realization that our military is currently getting chewed up in a long term war that might never have been started except that some in our Administration wanted oil that belonged to others.

Or at least wanted to minimize the chances that other people might restrict the sale of their oil in ways that would harm us.

The military people whom I know really like the idea of not having to fight wars. They'll go if needed. But they would prefer we find a workable solution other than putting them in the line of fire.

I suspect most of our solders would prefer we drive electric cars fueled from wind farms than they drive Hummers over IEDs.

Just guessin'....

Every military base, even fairly temporary ones, woulld benifit by proper waste management: ferment all biowastes in a digester, producing a little heat and biogasse. Burn the biogasse to generate electricity.

Dayton, Ohio, does this, generating enough electricity to power their wastewater facilities and more. A city in the Netherlands does the equivalent, in that case cleaning some biogasse to biomethone for a CNG vehicle filling station down by the docks. San Diego, CA, does much the same, with the biomethane going into the natural gas pipelines.

This is very powerful because of the size of the military's consumption and their R & D dollars. Amory Lovins has been beating on the drum of military efficency for a while because of the difference they can make. A small example, navy ships run 2 power plants at the same time because they can't afford any down time, but they are experimenting with battery storage to provide power if one plant goes down while they get the other one up. And we all know that better and cheaper batteries would make a difference with renewables.
