Well, I support advanced coal credits if at least 90% of CO2 emissions are sequestered (not future tense) and per kWh electrical emissions of mercury and other heavy metals, SOx, NOx, particulate and everything else is reduced at least one order of magnitude compared to the current coal fleet average.

"one [tax credit] for coal-fired power plants that capture more than half of their carbon emissions or that could be retrofitted to do so later."

Two words: perverse incentive

Ah, there is but a glimmer of hope. At the Obama rally I attended, and was volunteering at, two or three young men wearing some sort of clean coal shirts (from the group that sponsored the debates) were walking towards the exit as I was keeping an eye on the masses coming in. Yes, they were strict about what messages they wanted to appear, but there was never any problem with SEIU or other similar organizations wearing their shirts. NexGen is not going to be as good of a return on the dollar as many other technologies, and they know this. But I think we'll hear it come and go for a few years, at least, as it does provide a bargaining chip, of sorts. would it be cheaper to pay for NexGen, or just pay our miners to not work. That's one of Van Jones' suggestions, and I hope its viewed as an alternative for the coal state reps and senators.

If you think that any bill will come out of the Dean Robert Byrd's Senate without the Dick Durbin prioirty NextGEN facility and all of the benefits for coal that he force into it, then I would like to know who you are talking to.

I have little hope... especially now that being <a href="http://climateprogress.org/2009/01/09/china-announces-plan-to-single-handedly-destroy-the-climate/" rel="nofollow">competitive China</a> will be a major argument.

When all of the externalized costs of coal and nuclear are included in the pricing, then solar and wind may not need such big support and that money can go into building a truly distributed grid.
