Air Force drops plans to build liquid coal plant

February 2, 2009

Perhaps somebody heard my Plea to Obama: Kill the Air Force liquid coal plant. McClatchy reports:

The Air Force rejected the plans for the coal-to-liquids plant because of possible conflicts with the 341 Missile Wing’s nuclear mission. The release said the concerns included decreased security near the base’s weapons storage area, interference with missile transportation and “explosive safety arcs and operational flight safety issues.”

Not to mention that liquid coal is an environmental abomination with impossible economics used primarily by the desperate and isolated:

The main users and producers of fuel from coal have been South Africa and Nazi Germany.

Still you’ll be delighted to know that the Air Force is already using the fuel of the Third Reich and apartheid:

The Air Force has a goal to certify that all aircraft could fly on a 50-50 blend of fuel by 2011. It’s been purchasing fuel made from coal from Sasol of South Africa, most recently 300,000 gallons, said Air Force spokesman Gary Strasburg.

The B1, B52 and C-17 already have been certified to run on the coal-mix blend, and the F-15, F-22, C-5 and KC-135 all have also used the blend, Strasburg said.

Makes sense. Liquid cold drives up greenhouse gas emissions which leads inevitably to massive environmental refugees and military conflict of water, energy, arable land, and food, according to U.S. intelligence agencies (see “The moving Fingar writes: Reduced Dominance Is Predicted for U.S“).

National security gets trumped by job security in this full employment plan for the liquid-coal military industrial complex.

It remains worth noting that, as Greenwire (subs. req’d) explains:

Section 526 of the 2007 energy bill bars federal agencies from buying alternative or synthetic fuels if they have higher lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions than conventional petroleum fuels.

That should be fatal to essentially all fossil-based unconventional fuels, and most especially liquid coal.

Indeed. Let’s see if this can’t kill off the Alberta Tar Sands as well.

Though, the DARPA Coal to liquids grant is still out there. http://www07.grants.gov/ search/ search.do;jsessionid=Gp3vJHsM2bQ3NphyBJKPHYQGGC11v2NkRBFvLBhczXT6GT5PL74R!198294224?oppId=42899&flag2006=false&mode=VIEW

Do you have to use the Nazi reference? It’s pretty extreme. If someone said, “You know who else supported wind turbine research? Hitler”, you would decry their words. Your stance on coal to liquids stands on its own merits, without needing senseless parallels to oppressive regimes.

[JR: The media always uses it.]

  3. Now that the Air Force has secured nuclear weapons, it is moving to defend against a slow moving global climate annihilation.

    Wise choice.

U.S. Air Force needs to start testing/using biofuel. I suggest from Jatropha right away, maybe algae somewhat leter.

I’m sick and tierd of the CTL is dirty chant out there. Just wait. We have a process that can do it with no Co2! Create jobs, and give you all the oil you need and make money at these prices. But not telling you the link yet to be open to your bad mouthing. It really is coming guys.

  6. Gee, when the Air Force was bombing Nazi Germany into dust, they were the good guy for lefties like you, weren’t they? And those Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses weren’t doing their missions while burning cranberry juice. Are people like you really so out of touch with reality that you don’t think our Armed Forces need a secure source of fuel? Or don’t you believe in defense? I wonder if you would believe in defense if I started to prowl around your house at night with a club.

Regarding the featured book on this blog, “Hell and High Water” – I have a problem for you to solve. You can do it in your own kitchen sink. Fill your sink half way with cold water and the remainder of the way with ice, simulating the floating ice on the Arctic Ocean. Turn the heat up in your house and allow the ice to melt. Wait and see if the sink overflows.

How deceived you people are. God help you.
