Cynthia, as part of the education of the public you speak of, here's an idea to raise awareness of climate change:

As you know, polls show that Americans are now less likely to be interested in the issue of climate change, because many of them believe that addressing the problem will result in further job losses. On the contrary, addressing the problem would create new technologies that would lead to more jobs.

Each small step in raising awareness can benefit all of us -- and our children, grandchildren, and all peoples around the world.

Would you please consider sending a copy of this letter to GOOGLE? If you choose to participate, please send a copy of this email to 10 friends to encourage them to participate, too.

Thanks!

November 14, 2009

Mr. Eric Schmidt
CEO
GOOGLE INC.
1600 Amphitheatre Parkway
Mountain View, CA 94043

Dear Mr. Schmidt:

I think GOOGLE'S use of eye-catching, clever graphics to promote or spotlight an anniversary, a person, a project, etc. is extremely effective. I've enjoyed each "Sesame Street" installment, for example.

On a more serious note, I encourage you to unleash your incredible clout -- and visibility -- to use the same device leading up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in December, 2009.

Climate change is one of the most important issues facing the world. Please do what you can to spread the message. You could make a real difference considering the millions and millions of people who log-on to your site every hour of every day.

Thank you.

I remember going outdoors last February in the mountains of central Pennsylvania. There was no snow anywhere and the temperatures were well above freezing. When I was a kid decades ago, it was unheard of to go there at that time and not see snow. If that was a one time freak occurance it would be just a bit of unusual weather and it wouldn't be appropriate to try to tie that into global warming.

But now lack of snow and warm temperatures in the mountains in the middle of winter happens so often it's considered normal. I went to Colorado in late January and it was 75 degrees outside. The woods were mostly full of dead trees from the pine bark beetle. It no longer gets cold enough to kill this pest.

If you go outdoors and actually care to notice, the signs are everywhere that things are changing quickly and dramatically.

"go outside, take a walk, see how nice the outdoors is"

Cynthia, a good comeback to people who say such things is to point out that people who spend a lot of time in nature (including hunters and fishers, as well as more 'green' types like birdwatchers and hikers) are much more likely to accept global warming science, because they've *seen* it. Such as bird and plant ranges moving north, earlier snow-melt, etc.)

Joe, Newsweek of all places just gave George Will a page to repeat the "hasn't warmed since 1998" trope and the claim there could be decades of cooling (i.e. misinterpretation of Latif) "backed up" by a reference to - you guessed it - a popular press article about cooling in the 1975.

Slightly off the subject... Just read a post by someone saying that we are alarmists, we need to go outside, take a walk, see how nice the outdoors is, get a life. That's the problem: You can't see this problem; it doesn't SEEM that bad outside! Only through research does one see this awful monster (the breakdown of the climate system). Most people don't do the research (scientific/ reading) so they simply don't know. If more people knew, there would be uprisings! Therefore, the answer lies in Education of the public. Governments refuse to budge unless forced. We need mass pamphlets produced, Environmental groups coming together, public speakers going from city to city.

Alot of scientists are saying it's too late; it's over. Time is of the essence! When the young people start mass protests, that's when things will change (in answer to one of you posts-- you asked us when we thought things will change.) But first, has to come the Education. Mass protests will follow!
